TIGERS EYE GENUINETiger’s-Eye Genuine is made from the golden to red-brownish color stone, Tiger's-Eye, a chatoyant gemstone (resembles a cat's eye). It is a member of the quartz family and has rippling bands of light caused by geological staining with dark iron oxide. This combination of quartz and iron oxide produces another of Daniel Smith's remarkable Primatek paints that is very transparent and non-staining as well as strongly colored and granulating. The color is olive drab with undertones of cool ash brown. The textural effects of this pigment make it a sure favorite with landscape and artist who love to paint from nature.

BRONZITE GENUINEBronzite Genuine is made from a stone that might be mistaken as mundane if in it's natural state. Polished, bronzite is used in jewelry and and enjoyed for its metallic luster described as like cat's eyes. Where bronzite excels is as a pigment in the Daniel Smith Primatek line. It's warm honey-bronze color used full strength and landing somewhere between ochre and raw sienna, but distinctly different due to a lustrous sparkle. Bronzite washes down to a soft beige. This is a granulating pigment but with so much else going on, it is the less important feature.
SODALITE GENUINESodalite Genuine is made from a mineral that is somewhat similar to lazurite and lapis lazuli, but unlike lapis it rarely contains pyrite which makes the mineral sodalite more royal blue than ultramarine blue. Sodalite was first found in Greenland and then in Canada, Portugal, and Brazil. Its deep blue color is semi-transparent and granulates to a blue gray undertone.
BLUE APATITE GENIUNEBlue Apatite Genuine is a striking example of the Primatek series by Daniel Smith. The mineral is named from a Greek word meaning " to deceive" perhaps because it can be difficult to tell from some other minerals. Blue apatite is particularly soft and not used for many things other than ground up in a pigment or in some circles for its healing properties. Here, it is a rich midnight blue granulator that softens to a steely teal. Blue Apatite would be great in landscapes for skies like ours here in the Pacific Northwest,
IMPERIAL PURPLEImperial Purple satisfies the mystic in me. I love purple, and yes I am an old lady so it's expected of me. This is a richly textured purple that granulates to a variety of plum tones headed towards ultramarine blue tones, perfect for this hydrangea.
I also love hydrangeas, of course, so I will need a lot of Imperial Purple. I found that I was able to milk a huge range of values from one squeeze of the tube, including sweet pale lavender to the most, okay, I will just say it "Imperial" darkest of all purples. Next, hmmmm, Iris!! GERMAN GREENISH RAW UMBERGerman Greenish Raw Umber, is a great addition to any palette but especially for a watercolorist that paints landscapes. It is a cool, earthy, neutral brown, leaning towards murky water green. This pigment was the exact color I needed to find my way to the colors in both the duck's feathers and the lily pad obstacle course it was finding its way through,
BLOODSTONE GENUINEDaniel Smith's Bloodstone Genuine is part of the PrimaTek line of watercolors and made from natural pigments. Bloodstone is a member of the chalcedony family and is a cryptocrystalline quartz. The most highly regarded bloodstone is a deep forest green with a splatter of blood-red dots arranged in a spray as if they were blood spatter. Specimens with this color scheme and pattern are rare. Historically, this color pattern has been given religious significance as the "Blood of Christ" and the reason for it's name. Bloodstone is sometimes referred to as "heliotrope" and has been the official birthstone for March since the early 1900's.
Bloodstone Genuine as a pigment, is an intense wine soaked, dusky color when applied with a thick consistency and then washes down to a warm gray with a watery mix. It lifts beautifully and is an outstanding granulator. It mixes well with just about every color but Daniel Smith especially like it mixed with the transparent colors, Rhodonite Genuine and Quinacridone Burnt Orange. LUNAR EARTHYep! Lunar Earth is aptly named. It is and earthy version of Lunar Black in the way it separates and granulates. This transparent Burnt Sienna look alike is non-staining and lightfast. Daniel Smith suggests working Lunar Earth into a wet Lunar black wash and experimenting with that, I can see why. This is a landscaper painters dream pigment.

SOUL“I am a contemplative artist who has trouble accessing verbal skills. Finding the right words to talk about the amazing things I observe around me can be frustrating. It is much more natural for me to pick up a paintbrush, some embroidery floss or my camera when I wish to share some new discovery. The artwork I create is meant to be enjoyed on whatever level the viewer experiences it and not layered with complex meaning.
