Capturing an animal's likeness . . .. . . requires careful observation and an affinity with furry beings that must be honest and heartfelt. Without the ability to see the soul of a pet through it's eyes, getting down on all fours if necessary, and becoming cat like, one is left rendering a representation of a particular breed, but not it's character, personality or the very life inside. |
Catch a glimpse into the creation of a portrait . . .
The slide show below shows a bit of the process from start to finish of a pastel portrait. Each subject is a little different but for the most part they all begin with a rough sketch. Darks and lights are mapped out. The background is worked out to give the painting context and then the eyes and facial features are developed. For me, seeing the pet come to life begins with the eyes, the windows into their very being. It helps me to give further shape and form to the animal if I have the features in early. A portrait can take up to 80 hours depending on the size. The trick is always knowing when the portrait is done. Sometimes a day or two's rest after completion will allow me a new perspective and I can then decide if it is ready to sign.
